St. Michaels: The river G
One of the most rewarding of my life is music, particularly in some waterfront outdoor room with a cool breeze floating on the river and the last layer of the solution of the sunset over the trees. Fortunately for me, concerts Outdoor abound around the bay, but in my book nothing beats the summer on Tuesday night series at Muskrat Park, St. Michaels. When Clint and I received the list of performers performers, which is printed in advance, we saw them arrive Eastport Oyster Boys town. Saint-Michel is just a whistle on the river for us, we decided to take a picnic lunch aboard the boat light and idle Cookies at Muskrat Cove listening.
Muskrat Cove (a few letters, inexplicably, the call Church Cove) is located between St. Michaels Marina Higgins Yacht Yard in the port of Saint-Michel. It is quite shallow to begin (about five feet) and becomes more superficial as it edges toward the shore, thus taking more large boat is beyond question. Since Thursday evening, usually in the St. Michaels calm, even during the summer, the slides are generally available. If, after the anchoring or mooring outside the hearing range, there is much "space" for listeners, just make a blanket or folding chair and put on the lawn.
Working stiffs who we are, Clint and I had our daily routine at the end before we can Engine Oak Creek. But we had plenty of time to make a scenic detour before heading to the city. First poke Long Island and Point Hunting Creek. This had been one of our hiding places where even Invicta our sailboat in the bay. The channel is narrow and deep, and there are plenty of good use. Well there are more houses than there used are hidden behind thickets of foliage and removed from the edge of that swamp water lines. It would be easy enough to anchor the world and to ourselves. We cut the engine and glide savoring the calm. The Miles River was widened beyond the most basic of breezes, but the current was smooth as a mirror. Herons dug shallow waters, an eagle hovered above us and the distance you could hear the staccato rhythm of a woodpecker drilling for dinner. A bar on the water in front of us found a snake in the water the bank in disarray, its undulating body of a Seat on the surface of the water. That was enough to break the spell of Clint (who is not a great fan of snakes). He opened the starter and get out.
Concerts begin at 6:30 pm, more or less immediate. Often, we are treated to the talents premises, they are numerous, from bluegrass to jazz and folk origin. They Eastport Oyster Boys (ie, Jeff Holland and Kevin Brooks) came from Annapolis bringing with them a repertoire Live original music from lifetimes messing around on cruise ships and the bay. It mocks all things nautical of deck shoes to the kitchen cabin. But add a piece here and there, designed to allow your listeners to reflect on how the bay has changed over the years. And of course they have all received applause and chants and has generally held.
We hurried past the ship Parrot Point in weeks not many, and among the last people cracking crabs on the outer shell of the claw. We kept out of sight to see large boat Patriot, while taking a sip of his horn and began to withdraw from your slip, near the Maritime Museum of the Chesapeake Bay, preparing for a cruise sunset. Finally, cut the engine and drifted Muskrat Park until it melts in the muddy creek bottom. Many people had gathered on the field for the concert. They crowded the tables scattered picnic in the park or relax on the lawn surrounding the gazebo Victorian houses artists. Children climbed the same kindly pointing weapons at the port, the rest, they say, the war of 1812, when English warships threatened marauding Bay city before. It was a great home crowd. The St. Michaels Community Center (which sponsors weekly concerts in the series with the support of local businesses and the city) deliberately chose Thursday night for residents to enjoy a show without being overwhelmed by the weekend.
Clint put the cork on wine presented. I carefully arranged one or two glasses being filled, and we sat down to enjoy the music. The breeze cooled the river as the sun drifted downward. One could almost hear the tones of Jeff gun baritone ukulele and Kevin banjitar focus.
But wait! What it? Concert organizer Marianne Jackson standing beside the booth with Kevin Brooks, and he was saying. . . N concert? Deception! That night, all Jeff Holland had night car crash on the road to Saint-Michel, and was hard aground somewhere on Route 50. The show, he promised, will be postponed.
Clint pressed the button again, and we puttered out of port. Oh, well. The night was fine for a race up the river, and in no What time fishing through Mile River Bridge and the canal beyond. The night offered a symphony of herself as the sun bathed the trees in color and rhythm wings of an osprey to impose a slow pace. They Eastport Oyster Boys would have been great fun but it might as well, we were thinking, humming.
